Man o War Syrah 2007 #2725

Captain Cook named Man o' War Bay after dropping anchor there during his 1769 voyage. He observed that the kauri growing there would make ideal masts for the Man o' War wooden battleships which formed the basis of British naval supremacy.

With the ambition to grow world-class wines of elegance and power, suffused with a unique sense of place, the Spencer family planted the first vines at Mon o' War Farm in 1993. Today, 106 individual vineyards spread over 4,000 acres are bravely perched on exceedingly steep, free-draining clay hillsides and volcanic hilltops.

Predominately sourced from our steepest North facing slopes this low cropping Syrah was crushed into open top fermenters and manually plunged for extraction of colour and flavour. Retained on skins for two weeks post ferment for integration of tannins prior to gentle pressing and maturation in French and American oak barrels. Blended after ten months in barrel and bottled prior to harvest.

This wine exhibits aromas of blue berries and cloves with complex savoury tones. On the palate the wine is full bodied and succulent with firm ripe tannins and a core of minerality derived from volcanic soils of the island. Whilst drinking beautifully now this vibrant youthful wine will develop interesting complexities with age.
