Man o War Gravestone Sauvignon Blanc 2007 #2728

Captain Cook named Man o' War Bay after dropping anchor there during his 1769 voyage. He observed that the kauri growing there would make ideal masts for the Man o' War wooden battleships which formed the basis of British naval supremacy.

With the ambition to grow world-class wines of elegance and power, suffused with a unique sense of place, the Spencer family planted the first vines at Mon o' War Farm in 1993. Today, 106 individual vineyards spread over 4,000 acres are bravely perched on exceedingly steep, free-draining clay hillsides and volcanic hilltops.

Gravestone comprises of grapes that were carefully selected from our cool coastal vineyards. These small parcels were gently whole bunch pressed before being transferred to new and old French barrels for fermentation. The wine was then aged in barrel for a further 10 months with occasional lees stirring to enhance mouth feel and to add complexity.

Lifted lime and grapefruit aromas unfold to show hints of toasty oak. The palate shows ripe melon flavours with rich complexity and texture that is backed by a vibrant clean acidity and lingering finish. The ripe flavours and fresh acidity of this wine make it ideal for fresh smoked snapper and green salad.
