Kai Schubert is a graduate from the German Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim and his dream had always been to one-day establish his own vineyard and winery. This dream came true in form of Schubert Wines, in Martinborough and is operated by Kai and his partner Marion Deimling.

They had been looking for an ideal area to grow premium Pinot Noir for quite a while. They searched in several countries including the U.S., in Oregon and California, in Australia and France … but in the end, the Wairarapa in New Zealand was the most interesting.

Complex and developed on the nose with some herbal notes. The palate is dry but shows lovely ripe fruit sweetness and notes of cassis, red-currant, dark cherry and lots of spice with nice vanillary oak too. The mid-palate is developed, earthy and secondary with lovely texture in the mouth, quite creamy along with the earthiness - an interesting combination. Clean and very well proportioned wine, smooth on the finish.
