Lovely ripe lime citrus aromas with a backdrop of lemon blossom and musk nuances. The mélange of classic Riesling characters is supported by a delicate mineral acidity, which provides great length and persistence to the wine.

Jacobs Creek Three Vines Shiraz Cabernet Tempranillo

The nose shows layers of fresh spice, plum and dark cherry aromas, with anise and blueberry, black olive and savoury red fruits. Medium bodied on the palate, softly textured and with great fruit intensity. The
complementary richness of selected ripe Shiraz and the refinement of more elegant Cabernet Sauvignon parcels together provide an amazing array of classic fruit flavours which covers the length of the palate; this feature combines with a more contemporary, savoury edge attributable largely to the intriguing flavour and structure provided by Tempranillo.

Great with grilled lamb cutlets with caramelised pear, slow roasted tomatoes, basil, fetta and a balsamic reduction. [more...]

Joint Top Gewurztraminer!

Johanneshof regularly pop up in our tastings with their delicious interpretations of aromatic varieties. Johanneshof’s Gewurz 2009 begins with a pretty, citrussy nose. Flavours of grapefruit, yellow plum and a hint of apricot shine through in nice concentration and highlight that long, sweet finish. Superb. [more...]

Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2006

Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from five different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. We are particularly careful in selecting only the very best grapes from these vineyards for our Kumeu River label.

The perfect condition of the grapes and the lovely ripe nature of the vintage meant that this wine saw a little more new oak than usual (25 percent). The beautiful peach and hazelnut aromas along with the silky textural richness are distinct characteristics of this wine even at this young stage. This is undoubtedly one of the best vintages we have seen of this wine and is a sheer delight to taste and drink.

This wine will benefit greatly from a period of bottle maturation of two to four years. [more...]

Kumeu River Estate Pinot Noir 2007

In 1994 we established new plantings of Pinot Noir on our Kumeu Estate with the aim of producing red wine to rival the quality of our Kumeu River Chardonnay. To this end only the best new planting material available from Burgundy was chosen, and grafted onto extremely low-vigour rootstocks to limit the yield and intensify the flavour of this wonderfully aristocratic grape variety.

The wine has aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries, together with the maturation complexity gained from careful ageing in small oak barrels. There are also the lovely complex bouquets of smoky oak and dried leaves that make the great Pinot Noir wines so interesting and compelling.

On the palate the texture is very smooth and velvety, with warmth and length of flavour, and an elegantly full finish. [more...]

Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay 2006

Hunting Hill is a vineyard that was first planted in 1982 and was a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Mate's Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. After being replanted in 2000, Hunting Hill shows beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive mealy minerality.

The Chardonnay from Hunting Hill shares some of the characters with the neighbouring Mate’s Vineyard with its distinctive floral notes and restrained elegance. This site has a particularly pure character that, in its youth, displays a tight and crisp palate which needs some bottle age to reveal the power and concentration that lies beneath the surface. As with Mate’s Vineyard, this wine will improve with bottle age for four to six years. [more...]

Kumeu River Mates Vineyard Chardonnay 2007

The vines of Mate’s Vineyard are maturing nicely at 18 years and this is the only vineyard we have left planted with the Mendoza clone. The vine age and the distinctiveness of this clone help give Mate’s Vineyard its unique character. This vineyard has always displayed a lifted fruit aroma with distinct minerality and the 2007 is arguably the finest expression we have seen from this site. Take a look at the photo of the grapes from the 2007 harvest from Mate’s Vineyard and you see fruit close to perfection. This is certainly extended through to the finished wine which at this stage is quite closed but undeniably complex and concentrated. This will evolve beautifully over the next six - eight years.
